February Update – Aquatics

Thanyapura-PIA swim team debuts at FOBISIA Shrewsbury Swim meet

The swim team that represents both Thanyapura and Phuket International Academy, with 12 swimmers proudly representing our institution, headed to Bangkok once again from the 24th to the 26th of January for the FOBISIA Shrewsbury Swim meet. They hope to do as well as last time, when they returned from Bangkok with the high score team title.

This new period for the swim team, marked by three of our swimmers qualifying for the SEA Games, and by the core values that our younger generation displays at all events, is topped off by a change in name from the vague “SilverFinz” to “Thanyapura-PIA”. This shows pride in our school, our resort, and the lifestyle we live by.

The future, brighter than ever, awaits the team with the Thanyapura Open Swim League coming up on the 28th of February and the Rocket Science meet 27th and 28th of March.

World-class athletes training in world-class facilities

We again had the privilege to observe the elite training of the best in the world at our swimming pools. This month we have the Dutch national swim team, with Ranomi Kromowidjojo, Olympic champion in the 50 and 100 freestyle, as well as Femke Heemskerk, world champion in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

We also have a small group of Russians, some British Olympic hopefules, and the Master’s world record holder for the 50 freestyle age group 50-54, Brent Barnes, who can still swim 50 freestyle in an impressive time of 24’’26 — faster than two meters per second!

This frenetic activity is enjoyed by our different training groups: the master’s swimmers, more active than ever; the triathlon groups; and our members in general, who get some powerful inspiration to promote a healthier and more balanced lifestyle.
