Asia’s leading active and healthy lifestyle destination will host swimmers under FINA’s scholarship program for qualification to the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
PHUKET, THAILAND — Thanyapura Phuket has been announced as an official training center for FINA (Fédération Internationale de Natation), the world governing body for the sport of aquatics. Thanyapura will serve as the training base for athletes selected by FINA from national federations in Asia to prepare and qualify them for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and for the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan.
“We are looking for a long relationship that can help us in the development of our aquatic disciplines in Asia, as well as support our Asian National Federations,” says FINA President Dr. Julio Cesar Maglione. “FINA is working on the development of a high performance training centers network to assist our National Federations. We believe that Thanyapura follows its spirit and provides an amazing environment for the athletes and their National Teams in their training and preparation.”
Maglione cited Thanyapura’s facilities and services, as well as its location, as factors in its selection. “Thanyapura offers a large variety of services and facilities to ensure that the athlete optimizes his/her stay there. Moreover, the location of Phuket, and its easy connections all around Asia makes the centre a perfect option for us.”
“We are delighted to have been appointed by FINA for such a worthy endeavour,” said Mr. Philipp Graf von Hardenberg, Thanyapura President and Chief Executive Officer. “We are honoured to be entrusted with this important task, and we look forward to playing an instrumental role as 38 swimmers head towards the realisation of their Olympic dream, while at the same time we will boost advanced swimming in our region.”
Thanyapura is located 15 minutes from Phuket International Airport (with direct flights from Asia, Australia, and the Middle East) making it a perfect heat and humidity training base for elite athletes and national teams preparing for major competitions.
The 23-hectare facility includes an aquatics complex with a 50-meter Olympic standard pool with video analysis window and a 25-meter lap and teaching pool, an athletics complex, gym facilities, and a sports hotel purpose-built with athletes in mind. Its food and beverage offerings are made with fresh organic ingredients and designed to be healthy and nutritious to sustain athletes through long training days.
Thanyapura’s aquatics academy is overseen by head coach Miguel Lopez Alvarado, who has brought his 20 years of experience coaching at the elite level to both the master’s and youth development programs.
