Thanyapura Swimmer Aims to Break More Records in Singapore

swimmerFresh from breaking two National Records, a Thanyapura swimmer is preparing to dive back into the pool and compete at the FINA Junior World Championships.

Kimiko Raheem, of Sri Lanka, recently celebrated success at the FINA World Championships in Russia and will continue her reign in Singapore this week, with the hopes of smashing more National Records and bringing home a medal, or two.

The talented future Olympian will compete in the 100m and 200m backstroke events on August 25 and 27.

Thanyapura’s Swimming Head Swimming Coach, Miguel Lopez said: “After her exciting World Championship performance, we hope Kimiko can keep up the momentum and perform well and improve many National Records in the Championships in Singapore next week.”

Kimiko Raheem and swimmer team mate Cheran de Silva, of Sri Lanka, contributed to the 4 x 100m Individual Medley Relay Record in Russia. Following this successful swim, Kimiko celebrated once again later in the tournament after she broke the Women’s 200m Backstroke with a time of 2.21.18.

Swimmer Kimiko is one of 20 scholars, who come from all around the world, on a year-long FINA scholarship at Thanyapura in Phuket, Thailand to swim in the Olympics and FINA World Championships.

The scholarship applicants were selected from 10 countries, including Thailand, Nepal, the Maldives, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India, Myanmar, Timor Leste and Rwanda.

Thanyapura’s swimming facilities include a 50m Olympic competition pool, a 25m training and teaching pool, Omega Track start blocks, a Daktronics timing system and scoreboard, an underwater video analysis window, ozone filtration and sports science services.
