Train, Eat, Sleep, Repeat…Living Like a Pro at Thanyapura: When a runner comes to train

Running; you can love it, hate it, or have a love/hate relationship with it! Either way if you want to get leaner, meaner, fitter, faster, stronger and your not afraid of a lot of sweat, running a few varied kilometers and having a heck of a lot of fun, then TP is the place for you!!! This article will discuss why and reveal some running tips to help you survive the Thai heat!

There are many places to run and many types of run sessions to do. Here is an in-depth example…

500m running track– yes you heard me right, 500 meters’! Five hundred meters of the finest cushioned synthetic running track in Phuket! Why 500m, well I am not really sure to be honest but what I do know is that it is cool!

Your family can hide in the shade of the stadium and cheer you on as top coach and dex pro tirathlete Sergio Borges, tests your legs out!

Sergio doesn’t take no prisoners and twice a week at 5pm you will find him on the track accompanied by 10km’s of varied and intsene training to throw at ya! You can do it!

If running in circles isn’t your thing and your more into the throwing things and jumping over, across or under things then this running track can cater for all that too! At the track you can find…

  • Adjustable hurdles
  • High jump, long jump and triple jump pits
  • Track starting blocks
  • Media Box & Bose speaker system
  • 1500 seat grandstand at the athletics track and ball pitch. See, all bases are covered!

Just a little side note Phuket likes to deliver Monsoon like conditions at 5pm almost every day, you can practically set your watch off of it!

It’s the ultimate deluge that completely floods the track for all of about 5 minutes before it rapidly evaporates. It is fun to run in but it can make your shoes a tad soggy! Here’s some running tips when in Phuket:

Treadmill- or in my head it is aptly named the dreadmill! Not my fav thing to do but you sure can get the benefits! Dreadmills are fantastic for drilling out very, very specific sessions such as pace, time or gradient sessions.

So if it really is just too darn hot out there or verging on monsoon like rain or you have a very specific run set to do thanks to your coach wanting to torture you (what did you do wrong?!) then head to the modern, cool and high-tech gym at Thanyapura and get the job done!

Jungle Run– the jungle run as far as running tips go can be as long or a short as you want it to be! It is pretty steep though but flipping awesome fun! If your not too sure where you are going, like me, a guide can be arranged, as you probably don’t want to get lost! Make sure you take lots of water!!!

Side bar……. when world ironman champ, Daniella Rhyf came here to train she managed just about a marathon every other day (at midday), I have no clue where she went but it just shows you that the options are there to run that far if you really really want to!

running tips for the jungle

Hill reps– what a better way to start the week then 7am Monday morning with some hill reps. After an easy 2.5km jog to the bottom of the hill the session will commence. Sergio like to mix it up a little so who know what your gonna get! Don’t panic though, it is not the steepest hill in the world but hills are speed work in disguise after all so you can be assured that your getting bigger, faster and stronger but putting in the hard yards!

As I have mentioned a few times in earlier blogs, the weather in Phuket is HOT and HUMID! This means that your nuts to go running in the middle of the day if you’re a normal person BUT if like me your training for a hot race then midday is the ideal time to lace up your shoes, take a concrete tablet to harden up accompanied by a lot of water and get going!

My running tips will move onto the recovery stage. To accompany all that running around in Thailand and to recover, enhance performance or prevent injury there are definitely more than a few options for you:

Yoga: multiple classes a day in the Wellness center, there are even classes specific to endurance athletes, how good is that!

Massage: there is both onsite and offsite massage available to ease those hard working muscles. It is a must!

Ice Baths: after sweating it out on the track, gym or jungle nothing beats plunging into 13 degrees of coolness! Ahhhhhhhhh!

Strength and Conditioning: the highly qualified and highly skilled personal trainers in the state of the art on site gym can tailor a program unique to you to address all your needs to enhance strength and improve flexibility. If the gym isn’t your scene then you can always join in in one of the many, many fitness classes, including core specific classes, throughout the day at Thanyapura.

VO2 max testing: If you’re a numbers geek then you will love this! Tom the resident sport scientist can put you through your paces to find out just how good you are and just how good you can be by putting you in the lab and testing your legs, heart and lungs out!

So as you can see it’s not just all run and no play, there are so so many other things to do as a runner at Thanyapura too!

Also, implementing these running tips will only get you so far if you don’t remember to refuel and rehydrate. After all that exercise you can head to the booster bar or restaurant before face planting on to your amazingly, extremely, comfortable bed in your sweet hotel room!

Happy running!
