Phuket ATV ride (Optional for under 12 yrs.)

An ATV, “All Terrain Vehicle” is a term used to describe motorised buggies that are small and open, with three or four wheels, which are designed to be used off road or in rough terrain. A single operator drives it.

An ATV has a handlebar much like that on a motorcycle, a small engine and four large tires. Good ATVs can run easily on all terrains: rivers, dirt tracks and sand and mud. It is advised that drivers wear a helmet with protective glasses, elbow protectors and knee protectors. Expect some scratches.

This is much more than a dodgem car ride and kids need time to ensure they can use the throttle and brakes before they take off. An instructor should do a circuit or two before the driver rides independently. There will usually be a minimum age requirement. If the instructors do feel your child is too young then take their advice and try another activity.

There are several establishments around the island. There are circuits in Nai Harn and one in Kathu. There is an ATV park close to Chalong Circle, at the Phuket Shooting range. On site there is also elephant trekking, monkey shows, paint ball and cobra shows.

Zorbing Phuket / Roller ball

A Rollerball, or Zorb, is a large plastic sphere which can descend a hill with two passengers floating on the water inside. These are different to the walk on water models you may have seen.

At Zorbing Phuket a grassed causeway almost 190 metres long, has been designed for the plastic bubbles to roll down. Hold on tight and off you go! This is said to be the world’s longest zorbing run.

To really understand the concept checks out the videos on the web site.

Phuket fantasea show

Even if theme parks are not your thing, FantaSea is somewhere you should visit at least once (and probably twice). It offers a cabaret style show based on a Thai legend and includes singing,
dancing, acrobatics, a light show and wild animals.  It’s decorated with amazing asian decor, a sight to behold. A true extravaganza!

The park is set on 140 acres and includes a fairground, animal rides and shopping. Ensure you keep a watchful eye on younger children and establish meeting points with older children. It is very easy to get lost! The international buffet is by far the largest and can seat 4000 people ! There are various food stands representing food from Asian and western countries and of course from Thailand however the sheer scale and numbers means that this will not be a fine dining experience.

For bookings contact a tour agency or FantaSea. You can make your own way there or arrange to be collected by one of the FantaSea minivans.

The show starts at 9pm. Cameras must be deposited before the show so collecting cameras at the end of the show will take extra time!

Age: Ideal for children from 5 years.
Amenities: Toilets and nappy changing facilities

This aquarium was officially re-opened on the 10th April 2005. The aquarium includes an underwater walkway beneath a tank containing over 100 tonnes of water.

There are more than 200 species of fish on show, both fresh and salt water. The aquarium boasts a touch pool that little ones will enjoy, numerous tanks and an underwater tunnel.

Picture8Most displays have English translations. Don’t forget to visit the turtle displays outside where you can see turtles nesting, hatching and growing.

The aquarium has a souvenir shop, and a refreshment bar.

It is located in a lovely location on Panwa Bay. There are plenty of places to stop and have a bite to eat. My favourite is James’s Roof Top Restaurant as the view is superb.

Phuket Dino park

Dino Park is reminiscent of a prehistoric park: a mini golf course of 18 holes featuring scale replicas of prehistoric creatures, volcanoes, caves and swamps. Day or night this venue is a winner for children and parents. During the day there is plenty of shade, at night torches blaze and the lighting casts an eerie glow. One word of warning: the golf ball will disappear at the last hole.

There is a restaurant where dinosaur proportioned burgers are served. Local food is also served and beer, wine and spirits are available for parents. The course twists and turns so it is impossible to supervise children from the restaurant area. You can position your self near the exit so you watch when your child emerges from the course. Dino Park will also cater for group bookings and birthday parties.

Age: Children from 3 years will enjoy the golf. Younger ones will enjoy having a putt and walking around the course.
Price: Adults and children over 12 years pay B240 and children over 4 years pay B180 for mini golf. Course entry costs B120 for adults and B90 for children.
Opening Hours: 10am to midnight.

Phuket Zoo

Phuket Zoo is a small private zoo. The grounds are leafy and provide ample shade during the middle of the day.

If you have access to major zoos in capital cities, then this one may seem rather outmoded.

The zoo has a walk-through butterfly enclosure, a small aquarium where children delight in entering a crocodile’s mouth, and an orchid garden. Drinks and ice creams are available for purchase.

The animals are mostly kept in cages. The zoo boasts crocodile, monkey and elephant shows which are have little to do with animal education and are more concerned with circus tricks. However, if you live in Phuket this may be one of the few opportunities youngsters have to see animals.

Age: Children from 3 years will enjoy the golf. Younger ones will enjoy having a putt and walking around the course.
Price: All ages.
Amenities: Toilets.

Phuket birds park

Phuket Bird Park is a beautifully arranged plot of hillside land has exotic flora, winding paths, odd memorabilia, no less than three cafés, a souvenir shop and of course hundreds of beautiful birds from all around the tropical world.

The experience starts with a lovely wooden bridge – the sort you see in Disney cartoons with multi-coloured butterflies darting about – and a display of indigenous masks along with what appear to be didgeridoos (an Australian aboriginal instrument).

Picture17Sauntering on uphill we come across such plumed exotica as pied hornbills, African crowned cranes (fitting, as a local joke has it that the ‘crane’ is the national bird of fast-developing Thailand) great and wreathed hornbills, although you can catch them in the wild on Coral Island, Nicobar pigeons, and round the corner on an ever-increasing incline, moody-looking ostriches and comical emus.

The list is endless of the winged fauna you can observe at the Bird Park but some of the stars in the many thatched-roofed cages here are small and fiery-coloured Siamese pheasants (a species that we’d never seen before), red-billed blue magpies, and, just when you think all this splendour shouldn’t be caged up, visitors are approached by free range, fearsome-looking, but harmless white turkeys and chickens.

Phuket trickeye museum

Visitors often act shy in front of the first paintings but always get carried away as they discover the next scenes across more rooms than I originally expected. For the few who have no idea what they are supposed to do in front of each painting, there are set of photo samples pinned on walls showing what best to do to maximize the effect.

If you are alone as I was or if all of you want to be in the same picture, the staff will be happy to take your silly pose with your own camera, or you can bring your tripod as I did, it’s fun too.

Overall the quality and execution of Phuket Trickeye Museum paintings might not be as realistic as the one in Bangkok, but on the good side they didn’t do the mistake of varnishing the painting as much, preventing the glossy reflection that spoils the effect in other museums. However, visitors are required to remove their shoes not to damage the floor paintings, so be aware that some stairs are quite slippery.

At 500 Baht for adults and 250 for children, the price is a bit high but it is definitely a great way to spend time on a rainy day, especially if you have kids!

Phuket upside down house

In all ‘logic’, you need enter the house through the roof, directly into the attic. (If I didn’t show you the photos, you would be scratching your head right now).

From the attic, a staircase takes you to the main living area of the house where the fun really begins. First, your brain tries to make sense of what is going on here… ok, everything is stuck to the ceiling, it’s interesting.

Slowly your brain starts to adjust to the fact that you are actually walking… on the ceiling! You are the only object in the wrong position in the house! Even the real fish in the aquariums are swimming upside down! (nice touch here Alex).

Once you start to visualize this, it’s great fun to walk around and admire the designer’s skills… the bedroom with inverted TV playing video clip form the song ‘Upside Down’ image being inverted as well of course.

Baan Teelanka is open daily:10:00 am – 6:00 pm
Price for the House: Adult 250 Baht,Kids 150 Baht (4 to 11 years old) Price for the Maze 150 Baht, Kids 100 Baht
