Guests and members at Thanyapura Health & Sports Resort can now enjoy the new Pranayama classes now being offered in the mornings. Pranayama offers a number of important benefits for people of all ages and abilities.

What is Pranayama?
Pranayama focuses on refining breathing techniques and control. The word comes from the combination of 2 Sanskrit words: prana meaning ‘life force or energy in the body’ and either ayama meaning ‘restraining or controlling the prana’, or the opposing ayāma, meaning ‘extending the prana’. Pranayama dates back to ancient India, and is the fourth limb of Ashtanga Yoga. Effective breathing techniques help to improve the positive effects that all branches of yoga have on the body.

The benefits of Pranayama
Pranayama works together with Asana practice; the physical positions and postures made during the session, and provides many benefits for the mind and body. Alongside offering the benefits that regular exercise does, like improving cardiovascular health, lung function and athletic performance, it can also help to improve concentration by clearing the mind, aid in treating depression and anxiety, and help fight sinusitis.

What to expect after a Pranayama class
Following the class, participants can expect to experience a general feeling of well-being. Pranayama encourages the mind to stay calm and focused, and the body to relax. Participants may also have the feeling of being slightly lighter and taller afterwards. This is due to a heightened perception following an hour of intentionally refining breathing techniques, concentrating the mind, and working the core.

How long is the class
Thanyapura’s Pranayama classes are 1 hour long, and run from 07:30-08:30 hrs. each morning.
